The Shaw and Partners Shannon Eckstein Classic has wrapped up the Summer of Surf Series in incredible fashion with huge thrills as spills in the famed Summer of Surf Finals Package.
It was Matt Poole who stole the show. After receiving a tunnel of honour for his fellow athletes as he entered the arena, he then went on to win what will be the icing on the cake from his incredible career.
Having finished in a nail biting close second in last years event to Currumbin’s Jackson Maynard and just last weekend finishing second in his final Nutri-Grain Ironman Series race also in a sprint finish it seemed Poole would leave the sport agonizingly close to one last win.
“It’s so crazy out there today, all 20 guys on the line could have won. I wanted that win so badly especially after last weekend’s second place. I couldn’t have scripted my retirement any better, put a fork in me I’m done!
It was teammate Hannah Scully who stole the show in the women’s racing winning both the Ironwoman and Board Race and Scully offered one of the most excited claims we have seen in recent years.
“Last year I was winning before that massive wave took me out so to come back and race on the biggest stage and win means the absolute world to me!
The Summer of Surf proceeded to run it’s first ever formal awards night where overall champions were crowned and the series was wrapped up for another year.
