The Summer of Surf World Cup has kicked off in spectacular fashion with the inaugural International Sprint Challenge.

The top male and female ironman competitors from across the globe went head-to-head in a gruelling swim, board, ski and ironman race with the accumulated points declaring overall honours and bragging rights.

Athletes from Australia, New Zealand, France, USA, Great Britain, France and Japan were greeted with support from over 150 local school students who got to witness the action unfold with front row seats while also receiving a water safety talk and team shirts of their favourite countries.

The racing went down to the wire in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

It was Australia’s Lizzie Welborn who claimed victory on a countback over kiwi Danielle McKenzie while Jackson Borg (Australia) was two points clear of Bob Whittikar (Great Britain) with New Zealand’s Joe Collins rounding out the podium.

Jackson Borg was ecstatic to take out the first ever International Sprint Challenge.

“I had the best time racing today and it was so much fun mixing it with the best in the world. I am honoured to take out the first ever International Sprint Challenge and our sport is heading in an amazing direct internationally thanks to event like this.”

Racing now moves into the Summer of Surf World Cup with Ironman & Ironwoman heats taking place from 3:30pm NSW time before Saturdays 1pm finals package, livestreamed on 7Plus.
