Wanda Vs North Bondi 12/09/2020
Last weekend NSW had its first taste of the new Summer of surf “5 on 5 format”. Contested by to of NSW “up and coming” clubs we were witness to some of the tightest racing we are likely to see this season.
Race of the day
Race of the day had to go to Britney Pierce in the modified “one-way surf race”, that saw all the girls hit the wave zone at the same time. Eventually it was the surf skills pf Pierce that saw her pull down what seemed an impossible wave to put her team on the front foot early in the day.
Honourable mention
We couldn’t just pick one from this North Bondi Women’s team. This group of athletes punched well above their weight against an experienced Wanda outfit. Under Head Coach Scotty Thompson these ladies will ones to watch this season and beyond.
With only 4 athletes on the course in each race, every result is crucial in the overall point score. After going back-and-forth all day the score was tied going into the final event, the Taplin. Eventually, it was the experience of Wanda led by Ironwomen Britney Pierce and Carla Papac that secured the win in the inaugural 5 on 5 in NSW
The Men’s racing was another hotly contested battle, with both clubs stacked with young guns looking to prove themselves in the first hit out of the season. Much like the women’s racing, the end result was determined by the minor placings, with each club posting 3 race wins one the day.

ROTD belonged to youngster Charlie Germain from North Bondi. Germain dominated the majority of the men’s ski race only to pipped by Wanda’s Noah Steiner in the dying stages, proving that there might be another top dog in the North Bondi Ski Squad.
Our honourable mentio goes to North Bondi’s Charlie Verco, who showed maturity and surf skills beyond his years to capture the Ironman and Surf race. Vecro’s tactical decision to swim north (in both races) paid dividends, as he found the sandbank first and sprinted away to a pair of upset wins that kept his Wanda club in the fight for the overall pointscore.
Even with Charlie Vecros heroics, it still wasn’t enough for North Bondi, as the host clubs consistency across all races proved to be too much. The Wanda club completed the white-wash and have cemented themselves as the “club to beat” in NSW this season.
